Built in 1896 by Karl Pitscheider, as the annexes of “Posta al Cervo” inn, it was enlarged ten years later with the construction of the second wing and of the tower, its unique characteristics. With the introduction of winter sports in Val Gardena, Oswald Hotel was numbered with the most luxurious hotels on an international scale.
During the Second World War, it was used as a military hospital, but it regained the ancient splendour and fame in the post-war period, with the management of Ossi Pitscheider. Thanks to well conceived marketing strategies, he was able to attract towards Selva hundreds of students from the renowned universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Oswald Hotel was shut down in 1966 due to financial troubles. In 1970 various local entrepreneurs tried to settle the financial bankruptcy and opened the Hotel again, but just for a very short period. Only in 1978 some hotel-owners were able to buy and renovate it. Oswald Hotel reopening in 1981 marked a successful period still lasting today. Since then it has been completely renovated, during three different phases, the most recent one in 2007. |
